The Thistlegorm was carrying military supplies for the British 8th Army in North Africa when it was bombed by German Heinkels on the night of 6th October 1941. Amongst the cargo were BSA motorcycles, Bedford trucks, aircraft spare parts, a couple of Stanier 8F 2-8-0 locomotives with tenders and bowsers and even Wellington boots for the troops. The ship lies upright at a maximum depth of around 31 metres at its keel and is arguably the world's most dived shipwreck.
